Univ. Prof. Astrid Schubring is full professor of sociology of sport at the German Sports University Cologne and head of the Sociology of sport section at the Institute for Sociology and Gender Studies.
She received her doctorate from the University of Tübingen (2014) and her habilitation at the Department of Food, and Nutrition and Sports Science at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2019). She worked at the University of Halmstad, the University of Tübingen and the University of Heidelberg, among others.
Her research interests lie at the intersection of the sociology of sport, the body and health. Her central subject areas are:
- Athlete health and wellbing,
- Career paths of Olympic and Paralympic athletes and coaches
- Socialization and learning processes in school and organized sports,
- Body ideals in adolescence,
- Biographical research in sport,
- Gender equity in sport,
- Social sustainability of sport, and
- Innovative and participatory research designs.
